Shout Factory has once again pleased fans of nostalgic television by releasing “Blossom Seasons 1 & 2” on DVD for the very first time. “Blossom” premiered on NBC in the spring of 1991. Since its original NBC run, “Blossom” has rarely been seen on television. “Blossom” was an innovative series about an eclectic teen who had a style of her own. A lot of television fans compared the character of “Blossom” to an older version of Punky Brewster. Mayim Bialik, who starred as Blossom Russo lived in household with her two brothers. “Blossom” launched the adolescent/teenage career of child actor Joey Lawrence who as a child starred in several seasons of the series “Gimme A Break.”
“Blossom” was must see TV for teenagers in the early 90’s. Blossom, the character shared her wit about life and teenage situations with the television viewing audience. She also kept a video diary to document her life. Mayim Bialik was joined on the sitcom by then newcomer Jenna von Oy who co-starred on the series as Blossom’s best friend Six. Jenna von Oy went on to co-star on the television sitcom “The Parkers.”
“Blossom” was a family friendly show. “Blossom Seasons 1 & 2” features 37 episodes on six DVD discs. Disc one features the shows pilot episode as a bonus feature. Commentary with Mayim Bialik, Joey Lawrence, Jenna von Oy and Don Reo is incuded for the episode “Blossom Blossoms.” Bonus features include “A Very Special Show” featurette which is a retrospective that highlights the show and the featurette “A Very Special Friendship” which highlights the friendship between Blossom and Six. The featurette “A Very Special Style” highlights the fashion of the shows characters.
If you were a fan of television shows such as “Step By Step,” “My Two Dads,” “Punk Brewster,” or “Saved By The Bell,” you will appreciate a coming of age series such as “Blossom.”
