Solange Knowles released her first solo CD several years ago. She is back with a brand new disc titled “Solange and the Hadley Street Dreams.” The disc is her breakout CD and she has been touring to support the new release. The first single “I Decided” was a success on urban radio. The second single “Sandcastle Disco” has been well received by radio and video outlets. The cool thing about Solange’s CD is that she really tries to be different than the current onslaught of young singers. She has a unique style that seems like she is trying to capture the old school R&B sound or the sound captured by post 2000 neo-soul artists. The disc isn’t hip-hop and doesn’t feature many get on the floor and dance kind of songs. Solange sticks to the script with the CD and doesn’t feature a bunch of guest artists on the CD. The only guest artist on the CD is Philadelphia singer Bilal. Solange’s disc is nice to listen to. As a fan of Solange, I must admit that her voice is starting to sound a bit like Beyonce’s. Unless you are a true music connoisseur it will be hard for you to listen to the CD and not think about her sister just a little bit. They have similar voices but very different singing styles. The first two singles “I Decided” and “Sandcastle Disco” are very good songs. Other great songs on the disc include “Dancing In the Dark,” “Valentine’s Day” and “This Bird.” “Solange and the Hadley Street Dreams” is a great offering by Solange. It’s something different that music fans can tinker around with and determine if it’s something they are interested in.
