Author LaJoyce Brookshire is a courageous woman. In her latest memoir, “Faith Under Fire,” she documents intimate details related to her first marriage. In her eyes, LaJoyce viewed her first husband as prince charming. He was everything that she wanted in a man. Unfortunately, she soon discovered his dark side. As if things can’t get any worse in a marriage than being simply unhappy and incompatible, LaJoyce soon finds out that things are far worse than she ever imagined when she discovers that her husband is HIV positive.
As a strong wife, LaJoyce stands by her husband as he fights the disease and she nurses him through the debilitating effects of the disease. In addition to dealing with the betrayal she felt from her husband for keeping the secret that he was HIV positive from her, LaJoyce also had to deal with the fact that many of his family members also knew of his HIV status.
“Faith Under Fire” is a story of courage. LaJoyce stood by her husband despite the challenges and shares her story with readers. “Faith Under Fire” is an interesting book and on that should be read by adult African-American women living in society today. HIV and the AIDS virus are real and it’s not often that readers are provided with a first hand of the effects that the HIV/AIDS virus can have on a family.
