Just barely a year ago Laura Weiss released the gripping novel “Such A Pretty Girl.” “Such A Pretty” documented a teen’s journey back from abuse. This time, Weiss examines the lives of two best friends who feel like they have nobody in the world but each other. Blair and Ardith are best friends.
They deal with teen angst together. They shun away snickers and jeers and bond by sharing their intimate thoughts about kissing and first experiences. They don’t get the positive reinforcement from classmates male or female. They are hardly two people you would describe as popular. They have each other and they are faced with one tangled experience after another. The title seems to derive from the vein that both Blair and Ardith feel that they are societies leftovers in a sense. Loneliness is a common theme in the book as parents spend too much time at work slaving at careers. Rumors at school cause pain and shame for the protagonists in the book.
“Leftovers” is a book that is vague in description on the jacket flap clearly by choice of editor and the publisher. It’s quite an exciting book and an easy read. If you read “Such A Pretty Girl,” by Laura Weiss you will recall that she is a very good writer. As with that novel, “Leftovers,” is filled with witty dialogue and the pace of the novel is quick. It’s not a book that you will want to put down once you start reading it.
