Baywatch Season One is now available on DVD. The first season DVD box set includes the majority of the episodes from the shows first season in syndication. Fans of the show may remember the shows true first season aired on NBC in the fall of 1989. The NBC episodes are not included in this season one DVD release. That’s not the only thing missing. During the shows first season in syndication there was a two part episode named “Nightmare Bay.” Unfortunately, these episodes are not included on the DVD release either. The website TvShowsonDVD.com explains what’s missing from this release and future releases. In addition to the missing episodes, not only is music replaced, the shows theme song is replaced.

Okay, so what is the Baywatch Season One DVD experience like? I found it a tad bit confusing. When you are watching the first season of a television series, there is some kind of explanation of the shows foundation and it’s characters. Since this release is essentially picking up two episodes into the first season of syndication, you are missing that explanation of the foundation and the characters. However, if you put on disc 5 first, you can view the episode “Panic at Malibu Pier.” This is the original network pilot episode and it is included as a bonus episode.

The DVD set disc one begins with the episode “The One That Got Away.” In this episode, young female life guards are being threatened by a vagrant looking fisherman who hangs out near the rocks on the beach. Baywatch was a show about beautiful lifeguards solving crimes that usually could be solved in 60 minutes. They also had their share of romances and rescues.

Baywatch Season One included some great actors. Erica Eleniak, Billy Warlock, Holly Gagnier, and of course David Hasselhoff are among some of the actors from the shows first season on DVD. David Hasselhoff stars as Lt. Mitch Buchanon, he is in charge of the staff of life guards and is also the father to a young boy named Hobie. Hobie has his share of storylines during the first season of syndication.

One thing I do appreciate about this release is that they don’t try to mislead the consumer. It’s clearly marked on the DVD package that this is the first syndicated season on DVD. It is also marked on the box, in small print at the bottom, that the music has been changed from the original broadcast version.

If you are a fan of the show and don’t mind the music replacements you should be happy with this set. Each disc is housed in its own slip case. Five discs total included in the set.
