SNL The Complete First Season

Saturday Night Live has appeared on DVD in best of and in various incarnations over the year. However, when it came to season sets of the series, fans were left to wonder if they would ever arrive. SNL was a live sketch comedy and the musical performances were as important to the episodes as some of the sketches. Fans wondered for years if music rights issues would prevent the show from coming to DVD in complete season sets. Universal was rather mum about season sets, but the news broke over the summer that Saturday Night Live would arrive on DVD in complete season sets with the first set arriving just in time for the holidays.

SNL The Complete First Season (1975-1976) is a really sweet collectors item. A fan of SNL really would be pleased with this first season set release. Hopefully, the quality of future sets will measure up to the dedication and effort put into the first season set. If you have purchased those SNL “Best of Sets” in the past, don’t even compare those to this release. This is a really nice deluxe box set.

The 1975-1976 cast were the one’s who got the ball rolling with the series. Cast members from the debut season were Dan Akroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtain, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman and Gilda Radner. Surely these names ring a bell to you. The majority of the cast members went on to have successful film and television careers in the 1980’s.

The great thing about the DVD box set is that it includes the episodes in their original 90 minute format for the first time on DVD—with all musical performances in tact. Season one musical guests included Simon & Garfunkel, Joe Cocker, Neil Sedaka, Desi Arnez, Carly Simon, Kris Kristopherson, and Gil Scott-Heron among others. Each single sided disc includes three 90 minute episodes. The disc case includes the name of the guest host, the musical guest and the episode air date. The first air date on the set is October 11th, 1975 and the set ends with the air date July 31st, 1976.

Another nice feature of the set is a booklet which includes really awesome black and white cast photos from the shows first season. Special features include original screen tests, a 1975 interview with the cast and the aforementioned collector’s booklet with the cast photos.

Accepted is an enjoyable comedy, although a little hard to believe. Bartelby B. Gaines is a high school senior who has one major problem. He hasn’t been accepted into any of the college and university’s that he applied to, not even the state university that was his fall back choice. Tired of not having an answer for the “Where are you going?” question and dismayed at disappointing his parents Bartely B. comes up with an idea. In the beginning it’s just an acceptance letter. He creates a letter stating that he was accepted to South Harmon Institute of Technology. He even has his friend create a website. Then he starts to think his idea might really work. When his father hands him a check to pay his tuition in full he decides to create a real college. He leases an old dilapidated school building that was once a mental facility and creates a college—dorm rooms and all. The plan just keeps going and going. Students enroll and they even find a dean. Before he knows it he has thousands of students show up at the made up school.

The film is hilarious and comes from the same studio that released American Pie.
I really loved this movie.

DVD special features include

Gag Reel
Reject Rejection-The Making of Accepted
More

The film’s soundtrack is pretty hot too and includes songs from Modest Mouse, The Hives, Citizen Cope, Weezer, and Ryan Adams among others.

Accepted is rated PG-13 and is now available on DVD.

The third season of The Facts of Life is probably one of the show’s darkest season as far as storylines are concerned. It’s a very heavy and emotionally draining season that I personally had to watch in bits and pieces on the DVD box set. Despite the ultra mature topics of this season, it does include some of the shows most memorable episodes.

Disc 3 features the episode “The Runaway.” Tootie was upset that her parents wouldn’t let her accompany the other girls on a trip to New York so she heads to the city by herself where she befriends a young prostitute and her pimp who try to recruit Tootie. In another episode, Tootie faces expulsion when she feels compelled to cover for Blair and the other girls who brought alcohol into the dorms.

The season opens with the episode “Growing Pains,” this is the episode in which Tootie gets drunk and faces punishment. The very next episode of the season, Natalie is attacked on campus after walking home alone at night. In those same opening season episodes, Blair has to deal with her mother’s cancer scare and the girls also have a situation in which a former student named Allison drops by Eastland and leaves her baby with the girls and they fear she isn’t coming back.

There are some fun episodes in season 3. Tootie gets to meet her celebrity crush Jermaine Jackson and in another episode Tootie writers love letters to herself to make the other girls feel think she has a secret admirer.

The season 3 DVD box set includes 24 episodes from the shows third season. The box design is similar to the seasons 1 & 2 box set. There are no bonus features this set.

Comedian Katt Williams filmed The Pimp Chronicles Pt. 1 several months ago. The special aired on HBO and was well received. This was Katt’s first stand up DVD. The performance includes cameos or special appearances from Snoop Dogg, Anthony Anderson, Da Brat, Cam’Ron, and Lil’ Jon among others.

I watched it. If you like Katt’s brand of comedy this will be right up your alley. It was a little too heavy on the profanity side for my taste but the performance was funny.

Katt Williams may be best known as Money Mike from the Friday films. His career has thrived in the past few years thanks to his various special appearances and his ring tone sales have been through the roof. He also is a featured performer on the MTV series Wild N’ Out With Nick Cannon.

The Pimp Chronicles was filmed April 15th. 2006 at The Atlanta Civic Center in Atlanta, Georgia. The DVD arrives in stores on November 7th.
