Degrassi The Next Generation-Episode “Rock This Town” U.S. Premiere Friday, January 26th on The-N!

Liberty has always been my favorite character on Degrassi The Next Generation. I mean how could she not be?  The only black girl, little Ms. Smartie Pants.

Liberty loved J.T. with all her heart and soul.  It’s like she had an undying love for him even when they weren’t together, he loved her too.  As much as she acted like she disliked him at times, her heart beat for him. They had a universal pull on each other and were always drawn together–for 6 seasons.

Degrassi The Next Generation Kills Off It’s Comic Relief

Degrassi The Next Generation is killing off their one character who is known for injecting a little comic relief into the series.  If you haven’t heard, six season veteran J.T. York will become the first Degrassi The Next Generation character to die of homicide. Well, that is if you don’t count Rick.  Rick was killed by Sean during the school shooting.

Degrassi The Next Generation is one of the most dramatic teen television series’ in history.  In six short seasons the show has dealt with topics such as date rape, mental illness, homophobia, abortion, anorexia, teen pregnancy, and believe me the list goes on.

Degrassi The Next Generation is a spin off of the 1980’s series Degrassi Junior High.  Those crazy kids in the 80’s had their share of drama as well.  One popular character on Degrassi The Next Generation was Joey Jeremiah.  Joey injected much needed comic relief into Degrassi Junior High.  He was more than just the funny guy, he knew how to be serious when he needed to be—similar to the character of J.T. York.

When the writers of Degrassi The Next Generation decided to write a school shooting into the series during the shows fourth season they carefully led up to Rick’s boiling point.  Over time we saw him ridiculed by class mates when he returns to Degrassi and then he faces the ultimate humiliation and goes over the edge.

The murder of J.T. York screams ratings and shock value as promos have been promising someone will die.  Even worse, the network basically created this tension in a mere handful of episodes–with a rather weak storyline.  Perhaps this is there way of showing teens just how quickly things can get out of hand.

As annoying as he could be at times, Degrassi The Next Generation needed J.T. York.  In a series where laughs or even moments that can trigger a smile are few and far between, this show is bound to have many darker days ahead.

J.T. was a long time character on the show, but outside of his big storyline with Liberty, J.T. hasn’t had too many big stories over the years.  Here are a list of characters Degrassi could have killed off, and how.

Craig Manning-Many fans of the show thought Craig’s reckless drug use would lead to his demise.  However, this wasn’t likely because he is one of the links between Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi The Next Generation being that Joey Jeremiah is his step-father.  This show has scene four incarnations* and will probably keep going.

Mannie Santos-Mannie’s cocaine experimentation leads to an unexpected overdose.

Ellie Nash-Tortured by Craig’s rejection and a hard first year at the school news paper Ellie becomes the shows second suicide.  (Character Claude committed suicide on the 90’s series Degrassi High)

Emma-Emma is another link between Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi The Next Generation so it’s unlikely they would kill her off, but if they did have her eating disorder return and allow Emma to succumb from anorexia it might prove to be a wake up call to young women just how serious this disorder is.

Paige-There really is no need for Paige to be a member of the cast anymore. Her storyline has clearly run its course.  However, it would be an interesting storyline if Paige got involved in binge drinking at college and died in a drinking incident.

Darcy-One of Darcy’s Internet stalkers catches her off guard and abducts her and she meets her demise.

Spinner-Spinner seems to walk the line between good and evil. If anything bad happened to him, Jay, or Sean I don’t think many tears would be shed.

“Grabbing my chest and collapsing on my bed because I just saw the Degrassi Youtube”

The-N began airing new episodes of Degrassi The Next Generation on January 5th. The new episodes are the second half of the shows sixth season. This season is especially groundbreaking for Degrassi The Next Generation because not only is this the first time characters in college are included in the storyline, this season features the first ever Degrassi homicide. Hey, I won’t spoil it for those that don’t know, but during the month of January a prominent member of the Degrassi The Next Generation cast will meet his demise.

Popular character Craig Manning returned to town in the episode “What It Feels Like For a Ghost.” If you recall, Craig left town last year to pursue his music career. He is back in town to spend time with his girl Mannie and his “good friend” Ellie. Craig brought back more than stories from the road, it seems he also has a drug problem. JT is still trying to woo new character Mia, and Liberty is less than happy about the situation. Emma and Sean are going strong and Mannie experiments with drugs to try to fit into Craig’s new world.

New episodes of Degrassi The Next Generation air on The-N Fridays at 8:00 P.M.

Teen surfer drama Beyond The Break is back for a second season. The season two premiere episode brought plenty of drama. Kai has a serious prescription drug problem. Lacey is on crutches, but she has hardly lost her edge. The biggest story of the season two premiere is Birdie’s love dilemma. Her boyfriend of one month Marcus is headed to Iraq—and he has proposed. Will Birdie say yes?

The season premiere is sure to air in repeats. New episodes air Friday nights on The-N at 8:30 P.M.

One of the most anticipated winter premieres on The N is the third season premiere of original series Instant Star. Not much has been revealed about the shows third season, promos just recently started airing. When we last saw Jude Harrison, she was in a panic because her G Major mentor and producer Tommy was leaving town and she wasn’t sure if she would ever see him again. Things did end on a semi high note; Jude was celebrating a number one album. Instant Star season 3 premieres on February 16th.

The second season of South of Nowhere proved to be quite addictive. When the show began it was a simple show about a mixed family from the Midwest settling into life in Southern California. The second season, gosh, proved to be very dramatic. The biggest storyline of the season was the love affair between Ashley and Spencer. Spencer, who was originally bi-curious, seems to have accepted her lesbianism and declares her love for Ashley. Ashley needs all the love she can get, early in the season her beloved rock star dad is killed in a fiery car crash. After her fathers death, Ashley learns that she has a sister named Kyla, who soon moved to town. Not only does she move to town, she moves in with Ashley.

Glen Carlin finds himself hooked on prescription drugs following a possible career ending knee injury. Clay has his own issues. It seems his girlfriend Chelsea is pregnant. Clay’s biological mother has moved to Los Angeles to explore her relationship with her son. Aiden and Kyla explore a relationship, but it seems Ashley is conflicted regarding the relationship because she has some kind of feelings for Aiden.

The Carlin parents attempt to patch up their rocky marriage, even though they clash regarding Spence’rs sexuality.

A third season of South of Nowhere hasn’t been announced. It would be a shame if it didn’t come back. It’s a really great teen drama.

Re-runs air on The-N.

Warner Home Video has done something that many studios have failed to do. They managed to wrap a late 70’s early 80’s series on DVD that lasted for 7 seasons. Numerous 80’s related one hour shows are in limbo as far as subsequent releases, but Warner did an excellent job with the Dukes of Hazzard DVD releases.

The Dukes of Hazzard-The Complete Seventh Season is now available on DVD. The DVD box set includes 17 episodes from the shows final season. If you followed the series, you will recall that Bo and Luke Duke drove out of Hazzard County during the shows fifth season to join the Nascar Circuit. They returned to Hazzard County at the end of the fifth season and remained on the show for two more seasons.

By the 1984-1985 season, the shows 7th, it was clear that the time had come for the show to wrap things up. Although the series had a loyal fan base, in comparison to shows like Miami Vice, Magnum P.I., and Knight Rider, Dukes saw it’s popularity on the decline. The show has always maintained a huge fan base in the Country music community and repeat episodes aired for years on the Country Music Channel.

The 7th season DVD box set includes 17 episodes.

Beverly Hills 90210 is one of the most beloved teen drama’s in television history. Fans of the Aaron Spelling produced drama have been waiting for the show to arrive on DVD for years. Finally, the shows first season is available on DVD.

Beverly Hills 90210 premiered on the Fox network in the fall of 1990. The show was a breakout success with teens all around the world and really was one of the first huge one hour hits for the network.

The season begins with parts 1 and 2 of the show’s pilot. It’s really neat seeing just how young all of the cast members look. In the early scenes of the pilot we are introduced to Brenda and Dylan Walsh. They have just moved to California after living in the Midwest, Minnesota to be exact. Brenda and Dylan roll up to school on their first day in their old car and are amazed at all of the luxury cars in the school parking lot and Brenda utters the classic line, “We’re going to need a bigger allowance.”

The majority of the major cast members are introduced in the pilot. Brenda quickly becomes friends with Kelly whom she meets in chemistry class. Brandon meets Steve in Spanish class, a class he shares with Andrea Zuckerman. He later meets her again when he goes attempts to join the school paper. David, who is a freshman, is scene hanging around campus with his young friend. They make plans to crash a no freshman party. We learn during part 1 of the pilot that Steve and Kelly used to be an item. Kelly’s nose job over the summer is also the talk of the town. David also finds out that Steve’s mother is a famous actress.

It’s the second episode of the season when show favorite Dylan McKay is introduced. He and Brandon hit it off and Brandon soon sees a side of the “bad boy of West Beverly High,” that most people don’t see.

Season one highlights include Brenda’s run in with the law after a friend shoplifts, Brenda’s budding relationship with Dylan, Brandon’s struggle with cheating, and the many adventures the Walsh twins face during their first year at West Beverly High.

The Beverly Hills 90210 DVD box set includes 21 season one episodes and the 2 part show pilot. The music has been changed for the DVD presentation of the show but the show’s theme song is in tact.

Special features include

Grey’s Anatomy is the television show that literally came out of nowhere and became a huge hit for ABC. The show debuted behind Desperate Housewives, but now in it’s third season Grey’s has landed it’s on timeslot on Thursday evening. Proving that ABC has a ton of faith in the series, they have put the show will face off with the CBS hit CSI. In the first few weeks of the Fall 2006 season, Grey’s has been holding strong in the timeslot.

If you are new to Grey’s Anatomy and want to see what all the hype is about you will want to pick up Grey’s Anatomy-The Complete Second Season.

If you missed the shows first season, you can actually start watching at season two and not feel light years behind. It’s very easy to get into the show and it’s characters. As season two begins Meredith and Christina are both reeling from the complications dealing with their respective private affairs with two people who are in an authority position to them.

Meredith had a fling with Dr. Mc Dreamy—but things get complicated. Not only is Dr. McDreamy married, his estranged wife has now moved to Seattle. She isn’t in town just to get her man back, the official story is that it’s work related. Christina and Dr. Burke had a little something-something going on—which has left Christina with a little something extra to remember him by.

A lot is going on at Seattle Grace. Not only do all of the characters have personal drama, they have to deal with patients, some with very unique conditions and explosive personalities.

If you are a fan of the television series Grey’s Anatomy you will definitely want to pick up the second season box set which is uncut. The set includes 27 episodes and a plethora of bonus material.

The set includes over five hours of bonus material.

Bonus features include

-Four extended episodes
-The Doctors Are In—Stars Answer Fans Most Burning Questions
-The Softer Side of Dr. Bailey-Up Close Interview
-Exclusive Set Tour-Go Behind the Scenes With Dr. Webber
-Creaking “Pink Mist”-Anatomy of a Special Effect
-Deleted Scenes and More

Overall, the set is pretty nice but the booklet inside is a bit cheesy and more like an insert rather than a true booklet. It features episode descriptions. The set includes 6 discs total.

Along with Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy, Lost is one of the most popular television shows on ABC. Just now starting it’s third season, the show has a huge cult following, numerous fan clubs and some fans have even organized a Lost Fan Convention.

Now some shows I say you can pick up on the second season without catching the first season. Shows like Greys and House, you can just pick up from the second season and not feel like you are missing much. As for Lost, you may want to check out the first season before you jump feet first into the show’s second season.

As the season begins the castaways are still stranded on the island and they have been for over 40 days. They have to face the challenges of the terrain, the weather and various elements just to survive—not to mention mystery and danger is around nearly every corner. Now if you were watching the show since the first season, you will recall at the end of season one, several characters took to a raft and tried to make a go at getting away. Well they are still alive—well some of them. Jin, Michael and Sawyer are alive and Walt is missing. Believe it or not, new characters are also introduced this season.

Lost is an interesting show in the manner that it’s not just a Gilligan’s Island type of show about some people stuck on an island. The shows writers really go above and beyond to bring mystery and intrigue into the storyline. If you are a fan of the show you will be pleased with the Season 2 Box Set which includes an amazing 8+ hours of bonus material.

Scarface is one of the most loved gangster films of our generation. If you watch the television series MTV CRIBS its common place for show subjects to show off their Scarfaces DVD’s or original artwork posters from the movie.

Okay, so Scarface has been on DVD for awhile now, but now Universal has released Scarface-Platinum Edition. Let me be clear, if you already own Scarface on DVD, there is no need to throw aside your current DVD. However, if you consider yourself a Scarface super fan or someone buying the movie for the first time, you might want to spring for Scarface Platinum Edition.

The movie really has become immersed in popular culture. Al Pacino stars in the film as Tony Montana. Tony is a Cuban refugee who really comes from nothing at all to become a powerful and rich Miami drug lord. The film is responsible for well known catch phrases such as “Say hello to my little friend,” and “don’t get high on your own supply.”

Okay time for what is new. The new platinum edition includes an all new audio track. According to the blurb on the box, every single sound effect has been replaced and remixed. The first disc of the set includes the movie with restored audio and video.

The second disc is dedicated to all of the bonus features. Bonus features include

-Deleted Scenes
-The World of Tony Montana
-Scarface Scorecard
-Making of Scarface-The Video Game
-The Rebirth
-The Creating
-The Acting
-TV Clips

If you love this movie, or know someone who loves for this movie, definitely spring for the platinum edition, but if you are just a casual fan of the flick you should be satisfied with your current DVD…
